With over sixty acres of display gardens and relevant plant collections, TBG is full of beauty, tranquility and opportunities for exploration and reflection. The Black Swamp Hosta and Daylily Society has planned, planted and maintained the Daylily Walk which includes 50 years of award winning specimens and historical garden that is an American Hemerocallis Society display garden. Green thumbs come to the Garden to learn more about the varieties of annuals and perennials nestled within the various beds and look for ways to incorporate new ideas into their home landscapes. Art lovers are inspired by original sculptures located throughout the Garden and our annual Crosby Festival of the Arts. The Black Swamp Hosta and Daylily Society also planned and maintains an American Hosta Display Garden. Directions: Coming from the North or South: - Take US 23/I-475 to the Central Avenue/US-20(Ohio) exit #13. - Turn RIGHT at the top of the ramp onto Central Avenue. - The first major intersection will be Holland-Sylvania Road. - Turn RIGHT at that light. - Elmer Drive will be located on your left, less than a mile down the road. - Turn LEFT onto Elmer Drive. - Continue on Elmer and Toledo Botanical Garden will be on your RIGHT side. The Black Swamp Hosta and Daylily Society sponsors and maintains American Hosta Society display garden and numerous daylily gardens throughout the garden. One feature is the geodesic biodome that is used as a year-round greenhouse. The partially solar energized facility provides an example of organically grown flowers, herbs, and vegetables. A unique environment for experimental growing! Directions: From US23/I-475, Exit 4-towards Maumee. Merge onto US24 via Exit 4A. Go about 2 miles to traffic signal. Turn right onto Conant Street/US20/OH25. Continue to follow US20 which becomes E. Front Street/OH65 after crossing the bridge over the Maumee River into Perrysburg. This year additional beds along the Walk,created a continuous floral display of 175 varieties of daylilies. Every type and form of daylily is present along the Daylily Walk. If you look around, you’ll even find a daylily that was hybridized in 1897! Spaces have been reserved for future perennials to complete the planting scheme. One bed has been designated for plants hybridized by Ohioans. It will fill up very soon. Ohio has one of the highest concentrations of hybridizers of any state in the nation. Each year the American Hemerocallis (Daylily) Society selects a daylily that has proven to be an outstanding performer, having one or more characteristics that are a significant advancement in the hybridization of new flower types and colors. It is awarded the Stout Silver Medal, named after one of the pioneers in daylily hybridization, Dr. Arlow Burdette Stout. First started in 1950, there are now 58 award winners; all can now be viewed at Simpson Garden Park in the Stout Silver Medal beds. Directions: From US23/I-475, take Exit 2. Turn onto S. Dixie Highway towards Bowling Green for 9 miles. Turn right onto T.R. 208. Go 1.7 miles to Haskins Rd./OH64. Turn left onto Haskins Rd. to W. Poe Rd./CR 78. Turn right on W. Poe Road. At N. Wintergarden Road, turn left. Turn left onto Conneaut Avenue, and Simpson Garden Park will be on the right.
