In 2008 the Black Swamp Hosta and Daylily Society planted 5 daylily beds and complementary perennials at Simpson Garden Park. This year additional beds along the Walk, created a continuous floral display of 175 varieties of daylilies. Every type and form of daylily is present along the Daylily Walk. If you look around, you’ll even find a daylily that was hybridized in 1897! Spaces have been reserved for future perennials to complete the planting scheme. One bed has been designated for plants hybridized by Ohioans. It will fill up very soon. Ohio has one of the highest concentrations of hybridizers of any state in the nation. Each year the American Hemerocallis (Daylily) Society selects a daylily that has proven to be an outstanding performer, having one or more characteristics that are a significant advancement in the hybridization of new flower types and colors. It is awarded the Stout Silver Medal, named after one of the pioneers in daylily hybridization, Dr. Arlow Burdette Stout. First started in 1950, there are now 58 award winners; all can now be viewed at Simpson Garden Park in the Stout Silver Medal beds.
